Eckersley had collaborated with his design partner Eric Lombers on more than a dozen LT posters in the 1930s. At the outbreak of war the partnership split up and Eckersley became a cartographer in the RAF while still designing posters for the war effort' (London Transport p. 193). He then went on to teach, and became the Head of Graphic Design at the London College of Printing. Over the span of his 50 years, Eckersley created nearly 80 designs for London Transport. This is the left sheet of a Pair Poster - a format standardized in the 1940s by London Transport's Publicity officer, in which half of the poster displayed text and the other, an image. The other sheet of this poster contains the title and information about angling. This image exhibits Eckersley's emphasis on geometric shapes and contrasts, but contains more gradients and details than his flatter, more minimalist designs of the 1970s and 80s. London Transport 197.
